We are in a time of mass mixture of good and bad, generally speaking. However, I want to address the mixture of good and bad art in today's music industry. I believe others in different artistic venues, such as movies, acting, or producing, can relate to this mixture concept as well.
This is a blog that has been a long time coming for me. As some of you know, I am a musician, not just a preacher. I began playing the drums at 10 years old and picked up the guitar 6 years ago (I dabbled a little when I was a kid) to write the songs and rhythms I was hearing in my head and in my sleep. I graduated from Fuller Theological Seminary in June of 2016 with my M.Div. in Theology and the Arts where I recorded 6 songs and performed 4 of them for my Master’s thesis project. I have spent the last 18 years playing music in some form, whether it be in bands, at church, or recording on my own. As of this moment, I am completing the pre production recording of my first heavy metal/hard rock/alternative rock album.
Part of my calling is to release the sound of heaven in the mainstream arena. I have attempted to coin the phrase, “prophetic mainstream music.” God has called many musicians, and artists of other forms, to the mainstream arena to release the prophetic fire of the Lord. I am not going to waste my time right now rebutting the religious people that will attack it and don’t understand it. According to them, you’re doomed to hell if you play anything besides hymns or worship music. Moving on.
Now, I know there are still phenomenal artists out there that are famous, but it is such a rare gem in our day and age. How in the world have we gone from masterpieces like Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, Metallica’s Master of Puppets album, and U2’s Joshua Tree album to twerking and occultic pornography for music videos and live concerts? Lyrics of today do not carry the poetic and/or artistic depth of bands like Alter Bridge, U2, or Metallica to name a few. For example, how often do you hear lyrics like on Alter Bridge’s song Blackbird?
The instrumental playing of legendary bands that revolutionized the music world are astounding with their rhythm guitar riffs, guitar solos, creative bass guitar, and powerful drum work that forged their own unique sound as a band and as a cultural movement. Unfortunately, these are elements that have been lost in today’s music where real instruments are replaced with recording softwares, vocals are overly mixed with autotune, multiple producers work on an album instead of the artists creating their own sound, and if musical instruments are actually used, the level in which they are played cannot match these legendary bands. Once you have listened to the mastermind guitarists of rock and metal like Eddie Van Halen, James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine, and Mark Tremonti (to name a few of my favorites), you could never find musical satisfaction in today’s music world. The raw, innovative talent that was exemplified in these bands is simply replaced with an overly produced sound and recording softwares today. There is a warmth, a richness that has been lost in the sound of music.
Because things have gotten so terrible, I believe that this is the prime time for God’s people to shine with phenomenal art and revolutionize our culture. God is the greatest artist in all of history, and we should be the most creative people in the world! This is the time to begin writing songs that carry a new sound, lyrics that grip your heart, and instrumental frequencies that release the sound and creativity of heaven regardless of its genre.
This points to us being in an artistic cycle as well. Rock music has taken a nosedive since the late 90’s and early 2000’s with its lack of influence in culture, overly produced sound, absence of guitar solos, and the lack of creative rhythm guitar. Record sales of major rock and metal bands are nowhere of what they use to be in the 80’s and 90’s. The only ones packing out arenas today are the ones that packed them out in the 80’s. The influence of rock music seems almost non existent in this generation of computer generated “sounds.” This is coming to an end.
There is a wave of rock and heavy metal that will take the mainstream by storm again as it did in the 80’s and 90’s because they will carry a raw, authentic sound that this generation is missing. We will see a similar rise to the top with this raw sound as it did with bands like Metallica in their beginning. The sound will be a new sound with a vibe of the old school heavy metal. The sound is going to be contagious because of its severe void in our generation. It will be similar to the concept of, “You didn’t know you were missing something until you heard it.” The sound will literally pound down the gates of hell and breathe life into a heavy metal death culture.
Within this, God is raising up men as artists to lead as alpha males in this generation that has attacked and castrated masculinity through politics and the Hollywood elitist culture. He is also raising up strong women to lead as alpha females (I have talked much about this before, but will write a specific post about strong women leaders rising). The alpha male vibe is going to come out through the sound of their music, and it will be another reason this movement will be contagious. This is a part where that “raw” feel in the music will come from. Again, people will be drawn to it because they do not know they are missing it! Our generation is in severe lack of genuine brothers and fathers.
I would like to finish and summarize this with a spontaneous prophetic song I heard on a YouTube video this week from Suzie Yaraei.
When we release the sound of heaven from the heart of the Father, it is going to draw in the seekers. People are desiring to hear a new sound! They are desiring to hear the sound of heaven, and it is our responsibility as living songs to bring it to them! It’s time to release the sound!
